You should know about Yunnan’s flower exports to Russia

According to the analysis of the Russian cut flower market compiled by BusinesStat, the import volume of cut flowers in the Russian market increased by 3.3% from 1.34 billion to 1.38 billion from 2014 to 2018. During this period, the import volume decreased from 2015 to 2016 and increased from 2017 to 2018. The main factors affecting the decline of imports are the ban on the import of flowers from the Netherlands in 2015, the reduction of supply from Ecuador and Colombia, and the embargo on carnations in Türkiye in 2016. In addition, the depreciation of the ruble and the decrease in actual income of Russians have led to a decrease in demand for flowers, thereby affecting the decrease in import volume.
Rose traditionally holds a significant proportion in the import structure of cut flowers in Russia. In 2018, the proportion of roses accounted for 59.8% of Russia’s cut flower imports. In 2018, chrysanthemums ranked second in import volume, accounting for 18.9% of foreign fresh flower imports. Carnation accounts for 13.5% of imports, lilies account for less than 1.0% of total imports, and orchids account for approximately 0.3%. Other types of flowers accounted for 6.7% of the import volume in 2018.
The structure of countries supplying cut flowers to Russia underwent significant changes from 2014 to 2018. In 2014, the Netherlands supplied cut flowers to the Russian market, ranking second only to Ecuador, accounting for 30.0% of the total, with a total of 401.2 million branches. The situation changed after the discovery of quarantine organisms in flowers from the Netherlands. Starting from August 10, 2015, Dutch flowers can only enter the Russian market after mandatory laboratory inspections of their phytosanitary status. This measure greatly affected the price of flowers, so Dutch flowers almost disappeared from the Russian market.
In 2018, Belarus became the main supplier of cut flowers to the Russian market, accounting for 49.5% of Russia’s cut flower imports. In physical form, Russia imported 683.2 million cut flowers from Belarus in 2018, which is 122.6 times more than the import volume in 2014. The fresh flowers supplied to the Russian market from Belarus are mainly re exported, often imported from other countries to Russia by impersonating Belarusian products. In monetary terms, the import value of Belarus increased by 12.5 times in 2018, reaching 40.8 million US dollars. Ecuador and Italy rank second and third in import volume, with 15.5% and 9.2% respectively.
According to BusinesStat’s prediction, the import volume of cut flowers from Russia will increase at a rate of 0.5-4.4% per year from 2019 to 2023, and the import volume will reach 1.53 billion branches by 2023.
